Programs: Aquatics

The YMCA has been America's leading swim instructor for more than 100 years.  But our aquatics programs extend beyond instruction.  We also provide recreational and specialty aquatics programs for all ages and abilities, including parent-child classes, water exercise, and water safety and rescue classes.

The Central YMCA uses national aquatic program guidelines and certified instructors.  For details, please call us at (408) 298-1717, email us, or visit our branch.

->Lap Swimming

Lap swimming offers self-motivated cardiovascular activity on an individual basis. Lap swim involves continuous swim stroke activity for the entire pool length of 25 yards. We offer lap swim in both our indoor and outdoor pools at various times throughout the day. Please see our Member Services Desk for a copy of the pool schedules.

->Water Walking (Ages 14 and up)

Water walking can be done on your own during most adult recreation swim times and in the slow lane during lap swim.

->Adult and Open Recreational Swim

Open recreational swim is a time for kids and families to play in the pool. This is a great time for kids to show off what they have learned in swim lessons. Children 6 years and under must be accompanied by an adult.

->Aqua Fitness

An enjoyable approach to water exercises with a graduated program to fit every fitness level. All class formats include exercises designed to increase cardiovascular strength, endurance, flexibility, and muscle tone.

Swim Lessons

The YMCA is committed to help swimmers develop the whole person in spirit, mind, and body. During our session, swimmers learn to swim, improve on swimming skills, learn water safety, build relationships with others, and have fun. Our session includes five components – personal growth, personal safety, rescue skills, stroke development, and fun and games. These five components build confidence in each individual swimmer, inside the water and out. Swim lessons are an all around positive experience for everyone involved because they give participants a chance to be exposed to a positive environment. Swim lessons are a mutually beneficial experience for students and teachers.

->Parent/Child (6-36 months)

In these classes, parents help children build confidence in the water as they become aware of the difference between moving through water and movements on dry land. Children also have fun with age-appropriate games that use basic water movements such as kicking and breathing. This class is not designed to teach babies to swim, but rather to introduce them to the aquatic environment and provide a special fun time for adults and infants to interact. Classes are 30 minutes long.

->Private Swim Lessons (Ages 3 and up)

Private lessons give individuals ages 3 and up an opportunity to work in a one-on-one setting with an instructor that fits their needs. Participants get a chance to improve endurance and technique in a more personal atmosphere. These lessons provide a great opportunity to learn at an individual pace. Classes are 30 minutes long.

->Semi-Private Swim Lessons (Ages 6 and up)

Semi-private lessons are available for families or groups who have two participants near the same age and skill level. Participants are responsible for providing the second person participating in their lesson. Classes are 40 minutes long.

->Adult Swim Lessons (Ages 14 and up)

Adult lessons offer a supportive class environment with an emphasis on skill development, safety, and form. Beginning and intermediate instruction is offered. Classes are 40 minutes long.
