Swim Lessons
The YMCA is committed to help swimmers develop the whole person in spirit, mind, and body. During our session, swimmers learn to swim, improve on swimming skills, learn water safety, build relationships with others, and have fun. Our session includes five components – personal growth, personal safety, rescue skills, stroke development, and fun and games. These five components build confidence in each individual swimmer, inside the water and out. Swim lessons are an all around positive experience for everyone involved because they give participants a chance to be exposed to a positive environment. Swim lessons are a mutually beneficial experience for students and teachers.

Parent/Child (6-36 months)
In these classes, parents help children build confidence in the water as they become aware of the difference between moving through water and movements on dry land. Children also have fun with age-appropriate games that use basic water movements such as kicking and breathing. This class is not designed to teach babies to swim, but rather to introduce them to the aquatic environment and provide a special fun time for adults and infants to interact. Classes are 30 minutes long.
Private Swim Lessons (Ages 3 and up)
Private lessons give individuals ages 3 and up an opportunity to work in a one-on-one setting with an instructor that fits their needs. Participants get a chance to improve endurance and technique in a more personal atmosphere. These lessons provide a great opportunity to learn at an individual pace. Classes are 30 minutes long.
Semi-Private Swim Lessons (Ages 6 and up)
Semi-private lessons are available for families or groups who have two participants near the same age and skill level. Participants are responsible for providing the second person participating in their lesson. Classes are 40 minutes long.
Adult Swim Lessons (Ages 14 and up)
Adult lessons offer a supportive class environment with an emphasis on skill development, safety, and form. Beginning and intermediate instruction is offered. Classes are 40 minutes long.

Swim Lesson Levels (3-13 years)
The beginning classes provide a child’s first experience in the pool without parents. Children learn the basic building blocks of swimming and are exposed to pool safety and personal flotation devices. The intermediate and advanced level classes focus on stroke development and endurance.
Pike (ages 3-5)
While adjusting to water and a group situation, children develop safe pool behavior and independence. New swimmers learn basic paddle stroke, kicking skills, back floats, and to hold their faces in the water while blowing bubbles. Ratio of teacher to swimmer is 1:5. Class length: 30 min.
Eel (ages 3-5)
For the child who has advanced from Pike. Children learn back body position with kick, front layout using arms and legs, flutter kick, and jumping off side of pool. Students are introduced to personal flotation devices, boating safety, and adjustment to water without flotation device. Ratio of teacher to swimmer is 1:6. Class length: 30 min.
Polliwog (ages 6-13)
For children who cannot swim independently. Class teaches basic water skills, including gliding with face in the water, floating, kicking and moving independently in the water. Teacher/swimmer ratio: 1:8. Class length: 40 min.
