YMCA child care offers a nurturing, caring environment.

Child Care

YMCAs are the nation’s largest provider of child care. We provide high-quality and affordable programs that are family-centered and values-based to nurture children’s healthy development. Our preschool and school-age child care programs encourage family involvement through special events, newsletters, parent advisory committees, and volunteers in the classrooms. The programs are state licensed, and all staff meet or exceed licensing regulations for background checks, education and experience.

Whether your child needs preschool or school-age care, we emphasize values such as caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Like all Y programs, child care is open to all, with financial assistance available.

YMCA Preschool Programs (ages 2 - 5)

YMCA Preschool programs offer a wonderful place where your child can learn and grow in a safe and nurturing environment. The programs are operated on an experiential learning philosophy—children learn by doing. The theme-based curriculum includes skill building for kindergarten readiness through a literacy-based circle time, arts, dramatic play, math concepts, building blocks, manipulatives, games, and physical play. The children also learn positive social skills and can participate in additional enrichment activities.

->YMCA Preschool-Age Enrichment Programs

The YMCA offers many enrichment classes for children ages 2 - 5. Enrichment classes include movement education (YMCA Gym Ventures and 1,2,3 Grow!), tumbling, youth sports, and swim lessons. The YMCA also has programs that involve families and their preschool age children. Look for our family camps, parent/child swim lessons, and parent/child movement classes.

->YMCA Kinder Readiness (ages 4.5-5)

The YMCA Kinder Readiness programs are offered at child care sites throughout the area. The curriculum is designed to prepare 4 and 5 year olds for kindergarten. The emphasis is on linguistic, phonetic and cognitive development, along with social growth and interaction.

In YMCA youth programs we try to:

  • Finger paint more and point fingers less
  • Do less correcting and more connecting
  • Take our eyes off our watch and watch with our eyes
  • Take more hikes, make more kites
  • Stop playing serious and seriously play
  • Do more hugging and less tugging
  • Build self esteem first and the craft later
  • Be firm less often and affirm much more
  • Teach less about the love of power and more about the power of respect, responsibility, caring and honesty
  • Put a smile on every child's face

YMCA School-Age Programs (K - 6th grade)

YMCA school-age programs include high-quality, before- and after-school care that is safe, convenient and active. Each program is licensed by the State of California and features structured, age-appropriate activities. Our staff is caring, imaginative and well trained with the necessary credentials to work and play with young people. Structured programs include homework assistance, enrichment activities, relationship building, sports and games, and arts and crafts.

The YMCA Afterschool Program is a low-cost after-school comprehensive program to enrich children’s lives.  It compliments school in a manner that is fun for your child.  A long-term goal of the program is to help your child develop socially through small group work while emphasizing your child as an individual.  Each small group is made up of children of similar age and maturity.  Neighborhood YMCAs partner with local school districts and community-based organizations to provide after-school programs.

Afterschool sites vary. For details, contact the YMCA nearest you.
