Fitness Center

The YMCA has two fitness centers that provide excellent cross-training benefits with strength training, cardiovascular and flexibility equipment. The Fitness Centers include equipment accessible to people of all abilities. A wide assortment of cardiovascular equipment including treadmills, cross-trainers, StairMasters, Stepmills, rowing machines, upright and recumbent Life-Cycles, and Precor Ellipticals provide a variety of aerobic programs to suit individual needs. Cybex with FitLinxx, a computerized work-out program, and free weights are available for resistance training.

->Cardiovascular Equipment

We have a variety of state of the art cardiovascular machines including treadmills, elliptical cross-trainers, steppers, rowing machines, and upright and recumbent stationary bicycles.

->Cardio Theater

All cardio equipment is connected to Cardio Theater allowing you to watch television while exercising. Please note that each member will need to supply his/her own personal headphones to enjoy the audio portion of the broadcast.

->FitLinxx

FitLinxx is an interactive fitness network designed to make sure you get a personalized workout each and every time you exercise. The system is designed to give you instant feedback while you exercise on the CYBEX equipment AND for your fitness coach to monitor your progress, helping you reach your peak potential. Each piece of equipment works a specific muscle group and is safe, effective, fun and easy to use.

Using FitLinxx at the YMCA lets you:

  • Exercise using a customized program geared to your goals, needs and constraints.

  • Receive personalized support from your Fitness Coach.

  • Get immediate feedback on your precise exercise movements.

  • Track your workout progress.

->Health and Fitness Inclusion

->Personal Fitness Program

The Southwest YMCA offers all facility members a one-on-one orientation concluding with the development of a personalized fitness program. 

With your Personal Fitness Program you will:

  • Feel confident with an exercise program that is right for YOU.

  • Feel successful with equipment that is easy to use and an exercise routine that is easy to stick with.

  • Stay motivated with guidance and encouragement from our friendly staff.

  • Become committed to exercise through the routine of a structured program.

Make your appointment today through the Member Service Center.  Available free of charge to facility members. 

->Youth Orientation

The Youth Orientation has been designed to introduce youth ages 9-12 to workout safely using selectorized equipment, free weights, and cardiovascular machines.  Proper weight room demeanor will be discussed.  Program participants will also be taught the proper usage of cable attachments, collars, and all bars.  Upon completion of the course, youth ages 11 & 12 will be able to access the fitness center and free weight room without a parent/guardian present.  Youth ages 9 & 10 are required to have a parent/guardian present during their workout.

->Free Weight Room

The free weight room has a variety of benches and equipment including: Smith machine, power rack, chest press, incline chest press bench, decline bench, flat bench, cable crossover, lat pull down, and dumbbells ranging from 2.5 lbs. to 100 lbs.


Group Exercise

The Southwest YMCA offers a wide variety of group exercise classes from traditional step aerobics to aqua aerobics. We strive to accommodate all fitness levels in every class; you are always encouraged to work at your own pace. Please be on time to class, to allow your body to warm up. Before starting any new exercise program please consult your physician.

->Aerobics

A 45-minute class focusing on cardiovascular fitness with abdominal and strength work.

->Balance Training

This class consists of a seated warm-up, range of motion and gentle strengthening exercises, and exercises that work on balance and coordination. The focus of this class is prevention of slips, trips and falls.

->Beginning Cycle

If you are new to a group cycling class, this is where to begin. Non-impact class conducted on a stationary bike. Appropriate for all levels.

->Belly Dancing

Get in shape through the elegant and exotic art form of belly dancing. All levels are welcome.

->Body Sculpt

This class strengthens and tones a variety of muscle groups in a non-aerobic format.

->Cardio with a Kick

This class is a combo of power cardio work with elements of kickboxing to give you a powerhouse class of cardiovascular and muscular endurance in just 30 minutes.

->Chair Aerobics

Working from a chair, this class provides a cardiovascular workout with no impact. It also includes segments of conditioning and strengthening as well as stretching and relaxation.

->Group Cycling

This workout is non-impact and as simple as riding a bike, so participants of all ages and ability levels can enjoy it. Each bike is equipped with its own resistance control so each participant can select his or her own level of intensity.

->Hi/Low Aerobics

A high energy high- and low-impact fitness class offering a complete workout with emphasis on cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, and flexibility.

->Light Aerobics

A low-impact, moderate intensity aerobic class, that includes a variety of aerobic activities, such as walking, low-impact aerobics, muscle strengthening, and stretching.

->Solid to the Core

A core conditioning class focusing on the abs, upper and lower back muscles, hips, inner/outer thighs and hamstrings.

->Step

Adjustable height benches accommodate multiple fitness levels and allow participants to increase or decrease the cardiovascular intensity.

->Step/Body Sculpt

A combo class providing a cardiovascular workout with strength training benefits.

->Quad Step

This step class is a high-energy advanced step class for the experienced stepper, using 4 benches for 4 times the fun!

->Pilates Mat Classes

Pilates is a series of controlled, mind-body exercises focusing on the core to strengthen and lengthen muscles, improve posture and flexibility, and enhance stability. The mat classes range from beginner (Fundamentals) to advanced. Mat classes will prepare you for Pilates Reformer training.

->Pilates Reformer Training

The Reformer is one of the most important pieces of equipment in Pilates. The Reformer consists of a sliding platform anchored at one end of its frame with springs. The platform can be moved by either pulling on ropes or straps or pushing off from a stationary bar. Exercises include the challenge of moving the platform and maintaining balance on a moving surface (if sitting or standing).

->Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga is an eclectic style that provides a strong grounding in movement science and anatomy while promoting health and wellness. This is an excellent way to achieve “inner and outer” fitness.

->Fitness Yoga

A 45-minute express class designed and developed for use in the health and fitness environment. A demystified style of Yoga designed for everybody.

->Yoga and Meditation

This class focuses on breathing, mind fitness, relaxation, and gentle stretching.

->Yoga for Osteoperosis

Safe “healthy bone” movements for those who have or are at risk for low bone mass and skeletal fragility.

->Seated Yoga

Working from a chair, muscles are stretched and strengthened, joints are loosened and lubricated, and internal organs are massaged and toned. The mind is calmed and the quality of breath improved.

->Therapeutic Yoga

A series of Hatha Yoga “inner and outer” fitness stretches, breathing techniques, and poses are performed in a slow, mindful manner. The exercies are modified to each indivvidual’s needs.

->NIA (Neuromuscular Integrative Action)

A low-impact creative class of aerobic movements blending principles and concepts from Martial Arts, Dance and Healing Arts.

->Reiki

Reiki is a gentle, simple and very powerful form of hands-on healing and meditation that works on all levels—spirit, mind and body

->Feldenkrais

Highly structured, verbally directed, and gentle movement sequences are taught in a group setting. These sequences engage the nervous system, musculature, and skeleton in focused movement explorations.

->Seated Strength and Stretch

Strengthening, conditioning, and stretch exercises are performed to music while seated. Class is ideal for individuals with physical limitations or new to exercise.

->Stretchflexion

Flexibility is the most commonly forgotten component of a fitness program. This class will stretch all major muscle groups and is a great beginning or ending to your workout.

->Meditation for Health & Hawaiian Meditation

This class uses deep breathing, rhythm and repetition to induce a relaxed state of mind.

->Tai Chi

Tai Chi, an art of engagement with both self and others, is a gentle exercise of fluid motion suitable for all levels.

 

Personal Wellness Services

The Southwest YMCA is pleased to offer the following fee-based personal services:

->Massage

Relax, Renew, Revive. Massage improves circulation, increases energy, reduces stress, and promotes well being.

->Personal Training

A Certified Personal Trainer can develop an exercise program to fit your individual needs and goals. You can choose to work one-on-one with your personal trainer or you and a buddy can share the hour and cost of the training session(s). Your personal trainer will guide you through your workout, monitoring your every move to make sure you are getting the most out of your workout.

->Fitness Assessment

During your fitness assessment we will measure your resting heart rate, resting blood pressure, body composition, upper body strength, core strength, flexibility, recovery heart rate, VO2 max and cardiovascular capacity. A certified YMCA fitness specialist will answer your fitness questions and help design an exercise program based on your assessment results and goals. We may require a doctor’s release prior to your fitness assessment.

->Living Strong, Living Well

Sponsored by The Health Improvement Program of the Stanford Prevention Research Center (SPRC) in association with the YMCA. A small group program designed for adult cancer survivors who have recently become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. This organized program of fitness and strength conditioning will help improve functional capacity and increase quality of life.

Youth Fitness

Our YMCA is a place where we build strong kids, strong in spirit, mind and body. We offer a variety of programs at our facility that foster the YMCA character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility while strengthening developmental assets, the building blocks children need to thrive.

->Youth Group Exercise

Tiny Tots (Up to age 2)
Structured gym time for tots with songs and games.

Y-Kids Fitness (Ages 2-4)
Structured gym time for tots with songs and games.

Little Sportsters (Ages 3-5)
Parent participation program designed to give toddlers their first taste of sports.

Shotokan Karate (Ages 5+)
Self-defense class for kids that teaches discipline, sharpens reflexes, and increases stamina.

Junior Fitness Frenzy (Ages 5–8)
Fitness can be fun! Kids make friends, develop coordination, and get a good workout in this class that features obstacle courses, relays and exercise drills.

Youth Fitness Training (Ages 9-13)
Youth develop good exercise habits as they meet new friends in a comfortable setting.

Off-Season Workout & Conditioning (Ages 9-13)
Conditioning class for young athletes.

Youth Yoga (Ages 11 and up)
Yoga classes developed with teens in mind.

Hip Hop (Ages 11 and up)
A great workout with the latest hip hop moves and music!

Gators Swim Team (Ages 6-18 )
Skills development, exercise, and fun in a team environment.

->Individual Exercise

At the Southwest YMCA, we believe that healthy habits begin in childhood. We welcome youth ages 9 and up in our Fitness Centers for individual exercise.

Youth ages 9 and 10 may work out with a parent or guardian in the Fitness Centers once they have completed the four-session Youth Health and Fitness class. Youth ages 11-13 may use the Fitness Centers on their own once they have completed the class. Teens ages 14 and older receive Health and Fitness Orientations with our certified coaches.


YMCA
