Citizen Schools (Ages 11-14)
Citizen Schools is an innovative after-school program for middle school students presented by the Southwest YMCA for students at Monroe Middle School and Campbell Middle School. The program is revolutionizing how students spend their out-of-school time through fun, challenging, hands-on apprenticeships that unite volunteer Citizen Teachers and small groups of students, ages 11-14. The apprenticeships challenge young people and adults to gain skills and understanding while creating resources for the community.
Citizen Schools strives to fulfill four goals:
-
deepen students’ understanding of community
-
improve leadership skills
-
give access to role models and mentors
-
increase academic skills
These goals are accomplished through various program elements such as team building activities, field trips, and apprenticeships.

Leadership
Our Teen Leadership programs are designed to help the youth of today become the citizens and community leaders of tomorrow. YMCA programs are led by caring staff who help teens develop confidence, teamwork and leadership skills. Model UN and Youth and Government give teens a unique hands-on experience in how systems and government work. They also give youth the opportunity to make new friends, build self-esteem, discover new ideas, and find their voice.
Youth and Government (Grades 10-12)
Join more than 2,000 10th through 12th grade high school students as they take over the government of California! Students learn leadership skills and gain hands-on experience in the workings of state government. The highlight of the program is a five-day mock legislature held in February at the state capitol in Sacramento. A program for teens who want to make a difference! Program runs throughtout the school year. Call (408) 370-1877 for more information.
